This study is based on interviews with 45 prisoners convicted of people smuggling/trafficking offences in 2005.  The report explores the following issues:

• What the smuggling/trafficking process involves, including details on smuggling/trafficking operators and their perceptions of the ‘market’.
  
• Why the UK is chosen as a destination by people smugglers/traffickers.
  
• Which groups typically comprise clients/victims of smuggling/trafficking operations.
  
• Attitudes towards the perceived risks involved in smuggling/trafficking, both in terms of action taken by relevant authorities and from other operators within the market.

Implications for policy and practice are outlined, along with implications for future research and a discussion of the value of conducting interviews with convicted offenders.
