Homicide

Although relatively rare, homicide is the most serious violent crime. The term homicide covers the offences of murder, manslaughter and infanticide.

The Homicide Index

The Homicide Index database is a unique data source containing details of each homicide recorded by the police in England and Wales since 1977. Key elements of the collection are:

  • Victim details (including method and circumstance of the case)
  • Suspect details (including relationship with victim and charge details)
  • Court outcome (including sentence length where appropriate and any subsequent appeals)

We use the data extensively for statistical analysis and research, and for police intelligence purposes.

Statistics are published annually in the Crime in England and Wales supplementary volume on serious crime.
