Statistics
are collected relating to scientific procedures performed on living animals
under the provisions of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. We
collect this information from licensees in accordance with section 21(7) of
the Act.
The statistics are published annually by the Stationery Office and provide
comprehensive tables detailing the numbers of procedures started, species
of animals used, and the nature and purpose of procedures. The statistics
inform the development of policies on animal use in scientific work, and
provide information for the scientific community, animal welfare
organisations and the general public.
